To Help Low-income Families File for Tax Credits
(San Benito, TX...) Volunteers are being sought in Cameron County to help low-income families file tax returns to claim valuable federal and state tax benefits. Tax benefits, including the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), can make more than $4,100 available to families earning less than $34,000.
The EITC is a federal income tax benefit designed to assist working families with incomes up to $34,000 and
Individuals making up to $11,060. It has been called the most significant federal program for lifting Americans
out of poverty.
Volunteers are needed for the START Center and other sites in the County. The volunteer led free
Tax preparation service specifically helping low-income individuals and families. Last year
in Cameron County an estimated $30 million dollars was "left on the table" by taxpayers.
Volunteers will help low-income workers fill out 2006 federal income tax returns and in some cases
File amended returns for the previous three years. In addition to the earned income tax credits, volunteers assist
Eligible workers claim the newly expanded child tax credit and education credits.
"We are looking for volunteers who are interested in helping people, networking with others to make a
difference in their own community," said Rhoda Reyes, Director of the non-profit START Center that
is sponsoring the efforts in San Benito and surrounding communities. "No prior tax experience is necessary," Reyes said. "Volunteers receive free tax training, and are assisted at all times by experienced tax preparers and
our staff."
After attending training classes, volunteers will work with clients through the tax season at the
START Center. Individuals interested in serving as volunteer tax preparers can call the Center at 399-7818.
